Recognition and Reporting of Child and Elder Abuse for the
Dental Professional
Millions of Americans
are affected every year by child and elder abuse. This abuse
takes on a variety of forms including neglect, physical sexual
and emotional abuse. Often the dental professional may be the
only allied health professional to have close personal contact
with victims. Given the opportunity for diagnostic interviews,
collection of relevant histories and physical examinations
hygienists and other dental professionals are likely to be the
first, and perhaps only, source of discovery for symptoms and
evidence of abuse. Others may be confided in by patients with
details of yet undiscovered abuse. This course will address the
prevalence, course and etiology of abuse, recognizable symptoms
of abuse and mandated reporting requirements and other relevant
South Carolina law in addition to the pragmatic concerns for
comprehensive patient care.
Speaker: Robert C. Nelson, Psy.D. – Dr. Nelson is the
Assistant Director and Chief Psychologist for Greenville Mental
Health Center of the South Carolina State Department of Mental
